Organizing the materials you find

There are a growing number of web tools to help you organize content found on the web:

Social bookmarking sites

Although these web sites are designed to allow you to apply keyword tags and bookmark web sites that you share with others, a major benefit of using them is letting you access your indexed bookmarks from any computer, since they are stored on the web.

Personal bookmarking sites

Reference (or citation) managers:

Most databases and many publisher web sites let you download article citations into reference manager software. The most convenient reference managers allow you to share citations with colleagues, and access online from anywhere.

Wikipedia has compiled a comparison chart of reference manager software.

Most publishers and grantmaking organizations request that you use a particular citation style when submitting an article or a grant proposal. Check here for information on when and how you should cite your sources, and for some of the more commonly used styles.

Free:

Subscription-based (Many schools make software such as these products available to students and faculty.)

Hybrids:

(Connotea is a place to manage your references on the web that allows you to import and export references from or into citation manager software.)

Citation builders (These utilities allow you to enter information about your content and will "build" the citation using the style you select.):

Document Management Software
